Single Strip Harvesting Reviews

Single Strip harvesting is now the most prevalent method used in surgical hair transplantation that aims to populate bald spots on the vertex and hairline sections of the scalp of people suffering from androgenetic alopecia. Basically, hair transplantation is a surgical process where complete hair and follicles are surgically stripped from the back and sides of the head, called donor areas, and transplanted or grafted onto those balding spots.

The donor hair will then continue to grow in their new scalp location immune to the ravages of DHT effects that have caused the death of follicles in those spots. Single Strip harvesting is the latest method employed in the process and involves single or parallel double-bladed scalpels to harvest hair-bearing skin from the scalp’s donor sites.

How Does It Work?

Hair transplantation started in the late 50s using the “punch-graft” technique with tools available at that time like the circular cookie-cutter like punch used for removing small tissue pieces for biopsies.

This pioneering technique not only poses a time-consuming work but was essentially a blind harvesting method that not only created unsightly cosmetics to the transplanted hair due to their circular patches containing only 15 to 25 hair strands, but more importantly, damaged large numbers of hair follicles in the transected harvests with smaller punches causing even more damage.

This is more because doctors performing the punches were essentially using the wrong tools and could not accurately estimate the angle of hair growth when the plugs were being taken out from the donor sites as the punch tools didn’t allow them to see what they were cutting out.

Strip harvesting solves this problem neatly with single or parallel double bladed scalpel that harvests a long single strip of hair bearing hair-bearing scalp from the donor scalp area and which the doctor can see where and what is being taken out without damaging or severing follicles.

Is It Good?

Single Strip harvesting has made hair transplantation surgery popular with results that are clearly superior to any previous process or, for that matter, any topical medicinal application to combat hair loss in patients suffering androgenetic alopecia. And because it is done with specially-designed scalpel for the purpose, the risk of incising deeper into the head tissues are greatly minimizes so that surgical complications from damaged blood vessels and nerves that often cause numbness in the donor scalp areas are a thing of the past.

The harvested strip is then subjected to slivering into smaller follicular units under a stereo-microscope before being grafted into the bald spots with a more pleasing cosmetic result. In addition, the harvesting process makes it the less costly than the alternative Follicular Unit Extraction process.

Any Side Effects?

There are no documented long term side effects if the procedure is done by competently doctors or dermatologists trained in hair transplantation techniques.  The donor area is expected to lose hair but they are easier to deal with cosmetically with the proper hair styling and apart from allowing time to heal the superficial wounds from scalp incisions, and the fact the donor hair follicles come from the same person, there’s no risk of body rejection.
