5 Basic Natural Hair Loss Remedies

Saw Palmetto

Saw Palmetto is extracted from the Serenoa Repens fruit and is rich in fatty acids and Phytosterols used in aboriginal American herbal treatment over the last 200 years for urinary and reproductive problems.

Limited lab tests indicate it blocks type 1 and 2 5-alpha reductase to interfere with DHT production which accounts for prostate problems in men and explains its efficacy in fighting off prostatic hyperplasia as well as related urogenital disorders. With excess DHT proven to cause androgenetic alopecia, you can find many naturally formulated hair treatment drugs with Saw Palmetto or Serenoa Repens in its ingredient list.

Nettle Root

Nettle commonly refers to about 45 species of herbaceous perennial flowering plants under the Urtica plant family, the most prominent of which is the stinging nettle or Urtica dioica so named for its needle like hairs that sting when handled carelessly. Of all the varieties, this is the one used in folk medicine dating back to the time of Julius Caesar to help his army stimulate blood circulation in the legs during campaigns in cold climate.

It is now known to contain high concentration of lipids, minerals, and vitamins A and C beneficial to hair growth. In addition, the nettle root extracts have been shown to inhibit the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme from converting free testosterone into DHT which binds to the follicles to slowly kill hair production.

Rosemary

Often accompanied by Sage, the two herbs enjoyed a long tradition of being used to wash hair and stimulate hair roots for renewed vitality as well as thicken hair strands. Just boil them together with nettle, peach leaf and burdock and then strain the concoction and use the liquid mix for daily hair wash.

You can also mix 1oz of ground rosemary with 2oz of sage, half ounce of ground nettles and straining the solution to add 1oz of castor oil and 1oz of water to make a hair lotion that you can apply before retiring at night or before shampooing.

Aloe Vera

Used by Indians and native Americans to stop hair loss and promote healthy hair growth, Aloe vera can be found in commercial shampoos and conditioners. It is a succulent cactus plant native to arid regions of Northern Africa but is now a common garden or backyard plant. Just cut off a tendril and squeeze the gelatinous substance out that can be directly rubbed onto balding scalp.

It is absorbed into the scalp to revitalize hair follicles and help restore the pH balance and cleanse away sebum accumulation in the pores. Alternatively, you can mix the squeezed Aloe Vera gel with coconut milk and wheat germ oil to concoct a shampoo that you can use instead of commercial grade ones.

Ginger

Ginger figures in traditional Chinese herbal homeopathic medicine as well as an herbal ingredient in Ayurvedic medicine with anti-inflammatory and circulatory inducing properties. It has been tested to contain rich concentration of fatty acids that are well-recommended for stopping hair loss and the thickening hair shafts. A simple solution containing a tablespoon of finely grated fresh ginger and an equal amount of jojoba oil can be applied to the scalp before or after shampooing.
