Minoxidil Reviews

What Is Minoxidil?

Minoxidil is a vasodilating drug that is formulated into over-the-counter medication to treat hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness. It’s the first and only non prescriptive drug that got FDA approval and comes as a 5% topical solution and styling foam for both men and women, the latter getting typically 2%-3% concentrations. It is now the most popular hair loss treatment that comes under various commercial brand names with Rogaine, Regaine and Avacor as the more popular at this time.

How Does It Work?

The mechanics behind Minoxidil’s efficacy in controlling hair loss and promoting hair growth is better understood with its vasodilating properties that helped high blood patients taking Loniten in the early 80s achieve normal blood pressures as blood vessels get dilated to improve blood flow.

The same action when topically applied over the scalp allows blood vessels feeding nutrient to the hair follicles to loosen up to allow more nourishment into the weakened remaining hair follicles in people with Androgenetic Alopecia.

Minoxidil is a potassium channel opener that causes hyper polarization of cellular membranes in its vasodilating action. While it is indicated to work only on the central or vertex area of the scalp, it gets increasingly less effective in treating large areas of hair loss which is often the case with older men.

Is It Good?

Minoxidil has enjoyed wide clinical tests and have been documented to yield visible results in 85% of patients with male pattern baldness taking the drug. When applied topically twice daily, those results come in 4 to 6 months.

Minoxidil has been observed to be effective in treating healthy males suffering androgenetic alopecia in their younger years, from 18 to 40 and progressively less effective onwards especially when bald spots are larger and the hair follicles in the area are already dead. There is no known medication, topically applied or ingested that can revive dead hair follicles.

Any Side effects?

It’s ironic that one of the side effects of using Minoxidil-formulated drugs like Rogaine to counter premature baldness is hair loss.  But experts say this is just a shedding of existing hair produced by the weakened hair follicles and is evident that Minoxidil is working its way though the scalp as it prepares hair follicles to regrow a thicker and stronger set of hair.

Major adverse side effects are not documented if at all, but like any treatment, it is always cautiously wise to consult with your physician prior to using it especially if you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, heart disease or are taking other prescribed medication.

Minoxidil is a pharmaceutical product known to interact with body chemistry in dilating blood vessels. As such, people taking it for the first time could experience mild complications like:

Arrhythmia

Rapid heartbeat

Dizziness

Scalp irritation

Chest pains

Numbing of the hands

Temporary weight gain or even facial hair growth

They disappear with subsequent use that increases the body’s tolerance but the fact that it is FDA approved indicates a high level of safety and efficacy.
