Getting Healthy With Foods For Hair Growth

A healthy diet never fails to stimulate and sustain hair growth, among its other health benefits to the body. But with more focus on maintaining a healthy hair and promoting hair growth to counter or prevent and delay the inevitable balding, there are special food groups that contain substances that have direct benefits to hair follicles.

Protein Sources

Hair is made of Keratin, a form of protein. Deprive your body with adequate protein and you can experience weak and thinning hair apart from generally emasculating yourself. Animal meats, poultry meats, and fish abundantly supply proteins. Legumes such as lentils and kidney beans also have the same proteins that are the building blocks to a thicker full-bodied hair.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids And Vital Minerals

Clinical studies have revealed that some substances contain health restoring and conditioning properties for healthy skin and scalp and one of them is Omega-3 fatty acid or alpha-Linolenic acid found in fish, especially Salmon and Tuna which offer the most abundant sources. Salmon, in particular, also packs all the nutritive proteins, iron and vitamin B12 that stimulate hair growth and healthy skin.

Nut products like cashew, walnuts and almonds are your next best sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Special mention goes to Brazil Nuts which are a rich source of selenium, a mineral known for maintaining healthy hair and which found its way in many shampoo formulation.  Nuts also contain a powerful antioxidant zinc without which hair loss problems can get uncontrollable.

Talking about zinc, oysters have them in abundance as well. Used as an aphrodisiac in many cultures, zinc-rich oysters are available only at certain times of the year so be sure to get some when they appear in the wet markets.

Vitamin Sources and Supplements

Let’s not forget about food rich in vitamins. Of particular interests are vitamins A and C which are known to help your hair follicles produce sebum which, at the right levels, serve as the scalp’s natural conditioning oils that emulsify and moisturize the scalp for healthier hair. You can find them in dark green leafy vegetables and are most abundant in spinach and broccoli considered the most nutrition-rich vegetable on the planet. Just be careful not to overcook vegetables as vitamins almost always dissolve easily when overcooked.

A dose of vitamin B complex also helps in stimulating hair growth. Chief among them are vitamins B3 or Niacin, B5 or Panthenol, B6 or Biotin, and B12 and can be found in whole grains, fish, dairy and poultry products.

When in doubt, go for vitamin supplements. The most common are Vitamin C and Vitamin E supplements, the latter being considered an anti-aging vitamin as it helps maintain the youthful looking skin and scalp conditions that create the right conditions for growing healthy hair strands.

Always go natural with vitamin supplements as they are easier to get absorbed by the body.  But don’t over-indulge.  As in anything else, overuse can be hazardous to your health.  Mega doses of Vitamin A and D, for instance, if taken as a diet supplement, can actually cause hair to fall off.
