Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) Reviews

Follicular Unit Transplantation or FUT is the more medically accurate name for surgical hair transplantation. This is the last resort for men with moderate to severe androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness who want to get the fastest and most effective way to regain a full set of hair permanently.

While OTC and prescribed pharmaceutical solutions can work on mild to moderate hair loss situations, the patient will always be under medication for the rest of his life as there is really no known therapeutic cure for male pattern baldness except to neutralize the chemical ravages on the hair follicles.

Once the medication stops, hair loss resumes on the vertex and hairline regions of the scalp susceptible to alopecia. FUT addresses the problem in one or a series of surgical out-patient solution – painful and expensive, but works instantly and permanently.

How Does It Work?

Hair transplantation started in the late 50s and can be done in at least two methods these days. Both basically require a donor hair with health follicles that is extracted or harvested and grafted or transplanted to the bald spot prepared to receive the graft.

The donor is the same person’s scalp which is typically at the back or sides of the head that are immune to androgenetic alopecia conditions. Once the hair is transplanted, it remains immune to the condition and grows normally. The donor area heals and can be covered with hair from adjacent areas.

The distinction is basically in the hair harvesting method used:

One that is more common and considered the standard way to FUT is the single strip harvesting method that essentially excises or harvests strips of hair-bearing scalp tissue from a donor area of the patient’s head like the sides and back where follicles are not affected by androgenetic alopecia conditions. This is often the preferred method for people with severe male pattern baldness and is the cheaper of the two.

The other method is FUE or Follicular Unit Extraction which is a more direct transplantation where hair-bearing skin containing 1-4 strands is excised from the donor scalp area using a special circular punch and grafted directly onto the bald spot.

The process is basically transplanting 1-4 strands at a time and can only yield at most 500-600 strands a day. Patients may need more session to get a denser set of hair depending on the severity of their baldness.

Is It Good?

Single Strip harvesting provides the best hair density transplant and is recommended for people who wear their hair long so as to cover the resulting healed bald areas in the donor area. For people who like to wear their hair short and can afford it, the Follicular Unit Extraction is the better alternative as the donor area can heal faster and leave no noticeable bald spots as the wounds are small enough to close-up in time leaving a more natural cosmetic look.

Any Side Effects?

Like any surgical methods, the risks of infection are always present. But if done competently, the only adverse side effect is the pain and the inconvenience associated with the procedure and the healing process that can leave unsightly scarification left by harvesting hair in the donor scalp areas. No body rejection is expected as the transplant is done from the some donor person as the patient.
