Follicular Unit Extraction Reviews

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is an alternative donor hair harvesting method in performing Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) with Single Strip harvesting using microscopic slivering and dissection as the other method. Hence, FUE is just another way for follicular grafts to be obtained.

The harvesting is more direct as it punches out 1-4 hair follicle strands and punched directly into the bald scalp area. Because of its more tedious and time-consuming process compared with Single Strip harvesting where an entire strip of hair-bearing skin is surgically removed and slivered under a microscope, FUE can only transplant 500-600 follicular grafts in a day and is often twice the cost of using standard FUT.

How Does It Work?

In a Follicular Unit Extraction process, individual follicular grafts are excised from the donor scalp area, often at the back and sides of the head, onto the bald spots prepared to received the grafts one after another directly. No scalpel is used compared to that in standard single strip harvesting method.

It uses a tiny needle-like punching instrument 1mm in diameter or less that result in a dull punch called a blunt incision that reduces the risk of severing or damaging follicles.

Each punch can contain 1-4 hair with follicles depending on the donor area. The donor’s hair area is cut short so the doctor can see exactly what is being punched. The small holes left after the extraction heals in a few days, shorter than with standard single strip excisions. The patient often ends with hundreds of these tiny wounds at the donor scalp site that contract and close off as they heal over time making then unnoticeable.

Is It Good?

Follicular Unit Extraction is the costliest technique in harvesting donor hair in any surgical hair transplantation process. At the same time, it also yield the least full head of hair unless you are willing spend more. It is best done for patients with moderate androgenetic alopecia where there are still remaining hair follicles.

It is less invasive process and leaves less scarring in the donor area compared to the standard single strip harvesting technique. Many use this in conjunction with hair loss treatment medication that can strengthen and cause remaining follicles to continue growing hair and delay the inevitable.

Any Side Effects?

There are no medical side effects in hair transplantation when done properly other than the slight pain patients can suffer after the procedure once the local anesthesia wears out and the scarification resulting from the surgical procedure.

And since the donor is the same person, there’s no known risk for body rejection of transplanted hair grafts. The main disadvantage of FUE is that it is time consuming and can’t possible move as much hair density as is possible like Single Strip harvesting can.

The nice thing about it is its minimal invasive surgical nature that does not produce one long linear scar at the donor scalp site and has lesser healing time with tiny scar left in the donor area that are both hard to detect and more easily covered with adjacent hair. FUE is a better alternative for people who prefer to wear their hair short.
