Types of Baldness

There are basically two types of baldness:

Permanent incurable baldness

Temporary curable baldness

Permanent Incurable Baldness

Androgenetic Alopecia  or Male Pattern Baldness

A generic predisposition that accounts for 95% of all hair loss cases in both sexes. The male hormone testosterone is converted into DHT by the enzyme 5 alpha reductase and ends up in hair follicles so they produce thinner hair strands and eventually die.

Cicatricial (Scarring) Alopecia

Scalp infection like lichen planus can cause a rare condition of scalp inflammation with itching and pain that can permanently damage hair follicles.

Temporary Curable Baldness

These other types of baldness are temporary and can be cured once a diagnosis is made and the causing condition is lifted or treated.

Self-Induced Hair Loss

Some people suffer mental or psychological disorders that cause them to pull out their hair and result in uneven hair loss patches in one or more places on their scalp. The condition is medically termed as Trichotillomania and can even afflict kids who are in the habit of pulling their hair. But this should be distinguished from people who deliberately shave their heads as a hairstyle that has become trendy lately.

Alopecia Aerata

As an auto-immune disorder on the scalp affecting both sexes, hair follicles get attacked as a foreign matter by the white blood cells on T-lymphocytes commanded by the body’s immune system and inhibit hair growth.

Anagen Effluvium, Chemotherapy induced Hair Loss

A progressively swift and homogenous hair loss that happens within 1-3 weeks of undergoing chemotherapy for cancer patients.

Telogen Effluvium, Stress-caused hair loss

Sudden trauma or sever prolonged stress like surgery can cause hair to stop growing and enter into a resting phase or telogen. After 3 months into telogen, the hair falls off and hair loss can be extensive even after the trauma or stress has gone.

Traction Alopecia

Another temporary hair loss situation when using certain hairstyles like dreadnaughts or tight pigtails and braids that stress hair at its roots causing them to fall off.

What Causes Hair Baldness?

The causes of baldness also lead to the types discussed above.

Androgenetic Alopecia or patterned baldness afflicts both sexes and is hereditary in nature. Once its starts, hair follicles undergo progressive weakening and death.  OTC medication can manage, delay or reverse the balding process in early stages. Stop the medication and hair loss resumes until follicles simply die out and baldness becomes permanent.

Cicatricial alopecia also irreversibly damages hair follicles that lead to permanent hair loss even when the cause is under control or cured.

The other causes are likewise discussed above under each type. If you stop taking chemotherapy and hair growth will resume.  Treat the immune disorder that causes Alopecia Aerata and hair loss stops.  Get over the stress and the trauma, and hair growth likewise resumes but after the telogen phase. Change your hairstyle to a simpler less stressful styling and traction alopecia goes away.

There are, however, other causes that lead to generalized hair loss but are more symptomatic of ailments or health problems. This includes:

Ailments and Infections – Anemia and other blood disorders can starve hair roots of nourishment so hair growth is stunted. Skin and scalp infections like the lichen planus causes patchy permanent hair loss.  Thyroid disorders can also result in hair loss from thyroxin deficiency or overproduction. Diabetes and systemic lupus are also known to cause hair loss.  But treat these conditions and hair growth resumes in a few months.

Hormonal Changes – Hormonal imbalances caused by pregnancy, childbirth and lactation, and birth control in women have been known to trigger hair loss. But once the balance resumes, normal hair growth also resumes.

Nutritional Deficiency - All sorts of health problems can arise from nutritional deficiency, hair loss is just one of them.  Insufficient protein intake can lead to hair problems with no source of keratin; the material hair is made of.  Vitamin deficiency is another than can inhibit healthy hair growth among other things.

Baldness Diagnosed? Tests And Diagnosis

Once you see hair collecting in your hair brush or comb in greater density than normal, or if you see them accumulate over bath floor traps, a visit to your doctor or dermatologist is in order.  Even if you know your family has a history of balding relatives, it’s still prudent to seek consultation with your doctor.

Diagnosing hair loss problems is often done with your medical and family history to rule out hereditary androgenetic alopecia.  Patterned baldness can be discerned immediately by simple physical check-up on scalp and hair growth patterns.  A more thorough scalp inspection or even a biopsy may be conducted to ascertain any underlying cause of hair loss as needed. In addition, detailed listings of your diet and lifestyle routine can already indicate a nutritional cause to any balding condition. If you are undergoing chemotherapy, you know right away the cause of your hair loss.

Prevention

In general, maintaining the proper healthy diet and exercise as well as the right personal hygiene especially on the scalp can forestall hair loss progression caused by infections, diseases and health problems. A simpler hair styling can be gentler to you hair to prevent any kind of damage due to physical stress on the hair roots. Other than that, preventing hair loss is really about treating hair loss. Nothing can prevent the onset of a genetic trait unless you take some gene therapy which is years away. However, some OTC medication can delay and even reverse hair loss in its early stages.
